Our stairs changed during our major interior renovation last year. Why would an art gallery have plain old white stairs? Why indeed? We cut backer board (cement board) to size, and pre-drilled the holes (for the screws to attach to the risers). We drew on an integrated downward cascading pattern, and did the mosaics for risers 2 and 3. The rest of the risers were done by OASIS members, community volunteers, kids during field trips to OASIS, and passers-by. And guess what! Everyone had their own idea of colors and patterns and the original pattern was forgotten. We love the effect of all that different creativity...don't you?
